What is MUN ( my experience and why is so useful )

Hi everyone! This article will be very useful for all of you who are interested in debate and public speaking. We will talk about MUN events and I hope you will learn something new and interesting!

What is MUN?

MUN is shortcut for the Model United Nations. MUN represents the model of debate where are two to five type of councils (committees or organizations) .

- Security Council

- World Health Organization

- Social and Humanitarian Committee - Historical Crisis Committee

Every council or committee has one specific topic which is discussed on one MUN. For example, BaLMUN 2021 had the topic of The Tigray War in Security Council. Also, WHO (World Health Organization) topic was Preventing a Future Global Pandemic While Dealing with the Ongoing Situation.

Now, how is MUN working? MUNs are usually held in parliament buildings of the city where specific MUN is organized. Members of MUN are called delegates. Each delegate is sorted in one of the four mentioned committees and represents different country. For example, I was sorted in SAHC (Social and Humanitarian Committee) and I was the delegate of USA.

As a delegate, you are not representing yourself, yet the country so it is very important to know that you must do very good research on your committees topic and you must speak in the favor of your country.

When you get sorted in groups of committees, your chairs and co-chairs will lead the whole MUN and debate.

Since I do not want to write about MUN rules and guide, I will give you a link which leads you to an article where everything you must know is written and very good explained.

Now, let's move to the importance of MUNs! I am personally very communicative and I have great speaking skill. I also love debate and MUN made me feel like a real delegate. It helped me develop my sense of politics and while being the part of direct debate where I, as USA delegate, needed to lead the debate, I improved my fast thinking!

Furthermore, you meet amazing people from different countries and I adore that! You must speak English, so you improve your language skill as well. Also, you inform your self on higher level and while doing research and while debating you feel very powerful in this good, educational way.

Very important part of MUN events is debate part. I love the fact that everyone must be involved and chair is always going to ask you for a speech on the part of the topic. I had this privilege of being the USA delegation so I had a lot of material and I could speak for hours. On the other hand, some countries do not have a lot of material because they are simply not as much involved.

If you are interested in politics this events are going to help you so much! My dream is to become ambassador and the MUN I attended helped me realize how much I love debate and politics.

But in case you do not like politics, but you like debating or you just want to improve your public speaking MUN is amazing chance. You can choose the organization that suits you the best and you can try yourself out! You never know! Also, MUNs are organized all around the world. Some MUNs are free and for some MUNs you must pay. If you are beginner like me, start with free MUNs and If you like events you can level up your game!
